Temperature Analysis

The web pages written earlier regarding temperature trends involved a presentation of just the raw temperatures. This web page shows the data presented in a slightly different manner using anomalies instead, using the deviation from an average. In this case, the data is above and below a zero line which makes it easier to see similarities when one location’s ‘overall average’ (i.e., its zero line for anomalies) is significantly different than that at another location. This presentation essentially overlaps the respective temperature trends.

The regions are separated here just for ease of viewing. There is no additional analysis included here per region. The temperature trends noted in regional averages (or world averages) were calculated in that page. A comparison between sun spot cycles and average temperatures has been presented in another page. A presentation of the differences between in the GISS raw and homogenized data sets is presented in another page.

The scaled CO2 levels are also presented with the average temperature anomalies. The CO2 levels were presented by first finding the average value between the maximum and minimum annual average values in the time of the data (1881 to 2009), subtracting that value from all the annual averages (to normalize the data for zero) and then multiply that value by a factor so that it roughly matches (by the maximum data point being near the 1.0 C point) the temperatures being plotted in the same graph.

The purpose of this presentation is simply to convey the warming and cooling cycles in the temperature trends and those cycles are not correlated with the continually increasing CO2 levels over the time of these temperature records.
